Research Says: Prevent Glaucoma by Eating More Green, Leafy Vegetables

Glaucoma is a serious eye condition that affects millions of Americans each and every year. It is known to cause vision loss. Luckily, recent research suggests that adding a specific type of food to your daily diet can significantly reduce your chances of developing glaucoma later in life. In fact, it could reduce your risk by 20 to 30 percent. Apparently, all you need to do is eat 1.5 servings of leafy green vegetables every day.

In the investigative study, none of the participants had the eye condition at the beginning of their study. They underwent eye exams every other year. After 25 years, 1,500 out of more than 100,000 participants had developed glaucoma. The individuals who ate the 1.5 servings a day were at lower risk of suffering from glaucoma.

The researchers believe the reason that leafy green vegetables are able to help prevent glaucoma is because it increases the amount of nitric oxide found in the body. Nitric oxide is important because it helps to maintain constant blood flow to the eye and optic nerve.

So, if you want to reduce your risk of developing glaucoma over the years while also improving your overall health, start eating a serving and a half of leafy green vegetables every day. The more you eat, the less likely you’ll have glaucoma when you get older.
