America is struggling with an obesity epidemic and it is not getting any better. One reason may be that traditional weight loss diets are not effective. Now researchers are looking at studies conducted on obesity to determine why that is. Dr. Sack, a professor of nutrition at Harvard, conducted a study that found that different types of diet work for different people. Two people can have the same weight, gender and age yet the same diet will not work for both. Weight-loss experts are starting to think that this happens because obesity is not just one disease rather is has many different subtypes. Each subtype requires a different approach when it comes to treatment. Lee Kaplan, researcher at the obesity, metabolism, and nutrition institute at Massachusetts General Hospital believes that there are more than 59 different types of obesity based on researched that he has conducted into the problem. So what does this mean for obesity? The research suggests that a customized approach to weight-loss might be more effective than a one-size-fits-all kind of program.
