The Benefits of a Gluten-Free Diet: Fact or Fiction?
For some people a diagnosis of Celiac Disease mandates the avoidance of any food or beverage that contains gluten. Yet for other folks, eliminating gluten from their diets is a conscious choice aimed at pursuing a healthier lifestyle. According to a recent article published by the University of Wisconsin Health System, “gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, rye and possibly oats.” Patients with a diagnosis of Celiac Disease experience many symptoms ranging from fatigue to rashes. People without that diagnosis simply feel that freeing their diets from gluten makes for a healthier lifestyle.
When it comes to those who make a voluntary commitment to a gluten-free diet, what is fact and what is fiction? According to participants, two benefits derived from gluten-free diets are increased energy and weight loss. Replacing processed foods containing wheat flour allows people to choose healthier, less caloric options like fresh fruit and vegetables. And consuming less calories translates to weight loss. Ridding one’s diet of fatty foods will also lead one to feel more energetic. While the gluten-free approach isn’t for everyone, it does appear to have its advantages.
